A musical family....

Music is deeply embedded in the Jarvela family. Timo (violin) hails from a strong tradition of fiddle players from "the land of a thousand lakes", his native Finland. Timo's wife Maria is also a professional musician (trumpet), as are two of their three children, Henry (cello) and Emilia (violin). Youngest son Ben also plays various instruments, but has chosen a different career path. There is rarely a moment in the house when an instrument of some kind isn't being played!

Music Tuition

Both Timo and Maria have worked as music educators in the Moreton Bay Region north of Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) since 1995. Graduates of the Qld Conservatorium of Music, they have also been actively involved as directors in community music organisations since that time. Henry and Emilia, both also graduates of the Qld Conservatorium of Music, are involved in music performance and teaching as well. Please contact us with any music lesson enquiries.

Music Publication

Established in 2002, Laker Music publishes Timo Jarvela's and, more recently, Henry Jarvela's string orchestra compositions for school students. The pieces are enjoyed by students around Australia and beyond, and many have been selected as set pieces for music festivals. We also publish Timo's popular string tutor books Tricky Fingers and Tricky Fingers 2, as well as solo and small ensemble pieces. 

Our publications are supplied in printed form directly to you or your local supplier. Alternatively, it may be possible to provide a digital copy in PDF format of the string orchestra music – please contact us for further information.

Instrument Services

We carry out servicing and repairs to student string instruments with the aim of keeping them in optimal playing condition and in service as long as possible. We also have both new and 'second life' student instruments available for purchase. Contact us to make an appointment.
